Highslide JS 25 September 2023

The bogie suspension springs arrive from Owen Springs
Highslide JS October 2023

Here Geoff is using an internal telescoping gauge on one of the frame to stretcher holes on the bogie. This tool allows us to confirm that the hole is truly circular. The gauge is locked to the internal diameter and then checked with an external micrometer to get the dimension
Highslide JS December 2023

These are the bogie axlebox guide liners, 8 in total. The 2 pairs on the left have the steel surface uppermost which will face the axlebox guide. You can see that the manganese steel side liner has been welded to the side - left hand on left hand plate and right hand on adjacent plate. The right hand pairs have the manganese steel face liner uppermost. These will machined down to the correct thickness and the grease lubrication grooves machined.
Highslide JS January 2024

The countersunk head bolts for the frame to stretcher fastening have arrived in stock. Mike uses a bit of persuasion from a hide head mallet to drive in the bolts. The heads have a hex recess so that we can prevent the bolt from turning when tightening the nuts.
Highslide JS January 2024

2 of the liners have had the manganese steel face machined including the lubrication grooves.
Highslide JS February 2024

Time to fit the special Timken drain plugs to the bogie wheel sets, complete with copper washer. The drain plug has a 45 degree slot; this allows the drain plug to be loosened (and not removed) so that an oil sample can be taken for analysis.
Highslide JS February 2024

A complete set of spring end shoes has been ordered - covering our requirements for the bogie, driving wheels and pony truck. On the bogie, we need 8 of them. 4 fit in the spring cradles as in the photo and 4 fit in the leaf springs. They are connected by 4 spring links and different sized cotters are used to ensure that all wheels are loaded evenly.
Highslide JS April 2024

A set of bogie axlebox guides and liners. These now need the 3 bolt holes that secure the liner to the guide to be drilled and reamed. Each guide has been individually fitted to the frames and each liner has been fitted to its guide. Therefore all pairs are uniquely identified with their position

R - Right Hand on Frame
L - Leading axlebox guide pair
T - Trailing guide in pair
Highslide JS April 2024

For the 2024 Open Day, we assembled the bogie with as many components as possible.
